MEP Louis Michel is pleased to invite you to a panel discussion on the referendum in Sudan and its implications.

Sudan is facing its most critical period in history. With the referendum result in Southern Sudan one of the first partitions of an African state since the colonial era will become a reality. On 9 July 2011 a Declaration of Independence is likely to happen, giving birth to a new nation.
 
The discussion will be based on the most recent developments in Sudan and on the new book, Waging Peace in Sudan, The Inside Story of the Negotiations That Ended Africa’s Longest Civil War by Hilde F. Johnson. As Norwegian Minister of International Development, Ms. Johnson played a pivotal role in the achievement of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement for Sudan in 2005 between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).  From 2007, Ms. Johnson has been Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF.
 
Ms. Johnson will share her analysis of the situation in Sudan, together with other prominent speakers, MEP Louis Michel and former Foreign Minister of Belgium, Bert Koenders, Former Minister of Development Cooperation  of the Netherlands and Rosalind Marsden, the EU Special Representative for Sudan.
