The role of EU Food Facility in connecting people to markets.
Wednesday 25 January from 18:30 to 19:30
The event will be followed by photo exhibition and cocktail reception
The 2007-2008 spike in food prices and the global financial and economic downturn pushed millions of people into poverty and hunger. By the end of 2008, when the number of undernourished people neared one billion, the European Union launched the € 1 billion Food Facility. Some € 367 million where channeled through the FAO, IFAD and WFP to bridge the gap between short-term emergency needs and long-term development. By linking farmers to markets and financial services, assisting sustainable and profitable farming practices and creating new revenue streams, 22 million of the most vulnerable people in 35 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America were empowered to ending food insecurity.
The Centre and World Food Programme are pleased to invite you on the 25th of January to debate the successes and lessons learned from the EU Food Facility and its role in ending food insecurity, with constituents, stakeholders and other policy-makers.
At the debate we will also launch the Food Facility photo exhibition: photos, videos and stories present snapshots from a wide range of field experiences where the WFP has moved people from crisis to empowerment. We will also present the work of a number of children and youth from Brussels asked to express in their own way how hunger can be eradicated.
